The Leon Lions baseball program recently held its annual weekend fundraiser and the varsity squad is preparing for the Diamond Classic, a preseason tournament.

The varsity, junior varsity, and freshman Lions conducted an intrasquad fundraising scrimmage on Sat., Feb. 10, at Leon. Proceeds from the event allow the teams to purchase new equipment for the upcoming season.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to get comfortable playing with each other,” junior Victor Castillo said. “We went in pretty excited because it was our first chance to play this season.”

The Lions will have their first pre-season games in the Diamond Classic on Friday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb. 20, at  Leon.  Their first opponent in the event is Rockledge High School.

“Our coach (Robbie Zimmerman) tells us to focus on today,” Castillo said. “He doesn’t want us to focus on the outcome, but take it one game at a time.”

Castillo feels confident that the team can walk away with a win, despite the fact that they’ve never faced the Raiders before.

The Lions begin regular-season play next Friday, Feb. 23, at home against Godby at 4:30 p.m.
