Betsy Fisher’s journey to becoming the 2008 Teacher of the Year was an interesting one.
After getting a bachelor’ degree in criminology from Florida State University, she decided that she really wanted to work with kids. She earned her teacher certification to be able to teach history, one of her favorite subjects.
Now in her twelvth year of teaching psychology and American history, Fisher came to Leon at the urging of former Leon principal Jim Nettles.
Her day rarely ends when the final bell rings because she is the girls’ golf coach and the faculty adviser for Mock Trial, among other activities.
“It’s flattering to have won the same award as so many wonderful teachers,” Fisher said.

Although she enjoyed a 20-year career as a flight attendant, Paige Twyman just had to come back to Leon High School.
The Leon alum first returned as a volunteer in the attendance office when her daughter, Haley, enrolled at school three years ago.
Twyman was such a success, Leon officials quickly hired her as a full-time employee. After working in the attendance office and the front office, she moved up to her current position as a receptionist in the guidance.
Leon officials say Twyman’s willingness to go above the call of duty made her a natural choice for the 2008 Employee of the Year Award.
“I’m very surprised to have won,” she said. “There are people even more deserving than I am, but I’m very humbled to have received it.”

Alan Morales didn’t always know he wanted to be a teacher.
After graduating from the University of Florida and Temple University, he worked as an athletic trainer for teams such as the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves.
But in his down time, Morales worked as a substitute teacher. Eventually he decided he wanted to be a full-time educator.
For his countless hours serving Leon’s student-athletes, Alan Morales has been named the 2008 Glenn-Howell Minority Educator of the Year.
Morales, the school’s head athletic trainer, teaches anatomy and physiology, biology and care and prevention.
“It’s an extremely prestigious honor, and I feel very humbled,” Morales said.

It’s always nice to have these type of stories, but I think there already were many of them posted throughout this year.
This article is nice, and informative. If it hadn’t been for this, I wouldn’t have known these teachers won. Although, it could have more background information on why they won these prestigious awards.
I agree with Peter. It was a good story, but not exactly eye-catching.
it was an interesting story. gives us info to know and catch up about what is going around school… ;>
It’s good to inform the student body about these kinds of things. The column was informative and gave interesting facts about each falculty featured.
good story and congrats to the teachers
You go Mrs Twyman! These members of the faculty are great and Leon is lucky to have them.
It’s great to know about this but I’m not very interested in this article.
Very interesting story but, i liked it.
Good story but I agree with janie. I think there should’ve been more information on how they got the awards. But if it wasn’t for this story, I wouldn’t have even known that they got the awards.
ya. I agree with peter. these are cool, but we have had too many of them.
Uhh…I don’t think students highly enjoy reading about teachers (that includes me). I’ve seen numerous stories about them, I’m getting tired. It’s a well written story, but I didn’t like the topic.
yay teachers! Everyone says that Ms. Fisher is an excellent teacher and M.Dawg is just a baller
It’s always nice to notice the teachers who are being reawarded for the hard work that they have to do.
It’s a good story, but more info on why they won the awards would be awesome
