Lions celebrate Inauguration

23 January 2009 15 Comments

Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president at the
56th Inauguration at the Capitol building.

On Jan. 20, Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States, and some Lions were lucky enough to witness the event in person.

Surrounded by presidents past, Obama repeated the oath of office with his hand on the same bible used in President Abraham Lincoln’s 1861 inauguration.

During his speech, Obama acknowledged the challenges facing the country.

“Know this, America — they will be met,” Obama told the millions gathered.

Taylor Brown, a senior, drove to Washington, D.C., on Jan. 17 and went to the Inaugural Opening Concert at Lincoln Memorial, where he watched Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce and many others artists perform for Obama. On Inauguration Day, Brown woke up at 4 a.m. and went out two hours later to brave the freezing weather. Brown stayed and watched the ceremonies until 7 p.m .

Brown found Obama’s speech to be the best part, which “had a lot of good talking points.” He was also inspired by the new president, which led him to the event.

“I wanted to be a part of history,” Brown said. “This is the first time we have a leader who knows what he’s doing and knows how to get it done.”

Advanced Placement Language and Compositon teacher Lorrie O’Dell was also a part of this historic event.

O’Dell recieved a ticket to attend the inaguration from one of her colleagues.

Her ticket allowed her to stand in the purple zone, which was located in front of the reflecting pool and the capitol.

Even with about 2 million people crowded together in one place, everyone was very kind and civil to each other.

O’Dell believes that Obama’s “awe-inspiring” speech caused feelings of hope within everyone.

“There was such an electric excitement in the air,” O’Dell said.

“I’ve never felt such pride at being an American before. For the first time, I felt like an active participant in something so much bigger than myself.”

I like the story. It’s a part of our history so it is important, but I did not like Brown’s quote “This is the first time we have a leader who knows what he’s doing and knows how to get it done.”
This is not the first time our nation has had a leader who knows what he is doing. Our very first president George Washington was a great president and there were more following. Ronald Reagan got us out of the Great Depression.
Overall this story had great detail and data to establish credibility.
