Black History Month: Celebrating Achievement

In the past, the school assemblies honoring Black History Month at Leon have had themes ranging from The Oscars to Showtime at the Apollo.
This year’s assembly will focus more on Broadway than Hollywood. The performance will be held during the school day on Feb. 26.
The title of the event has not yet been released, and the sets and costumes have not been finalized. But the theme is set: “People of color who have made it to Broadway.” That includes producers, directors, actors and writers.
Teachers Rod Durham and Millie Seckel are sponsoring the performance. Even though Durham has been in charge of this event for the past seven years, he has had the help of Seckel, Leon’s dance instructor, for the last five.
“We really only started the performances after [Seckel] came,” Durham said with a laugh.
Most of the show’s numbers will be performed by individual groups, but all the classes will come together to sing in the biggest performance of the show, a song from The Lion King.
“We just try to use as many kids as possible,” Seckel said. “Our main goal is to educate people about Black History Month.”
Some classes will be highlighted more than others.
“This year’s performance features the dance class and guitar classes,” Seckel said. “Drama will also be performing a few skits.
“Guitar will play a few jazz numbers, all composed by people of color.”

I’m glad such national events are presented with majesty, Black History month is one of the biggest events in american history and it should always be considered one.
I think this is an interesting article, but wish the facts could have been more definite and not just what they’re thinking about.
why is black history month in Feb.
There weren’t a lot of concrete facts in this article. More factual info next time!
This article was not very informative and perhaps it came out too early. Its generic in a way maybe there should be something UNUSUAL and specific about whats happening. We have a play every year.
Im glad that some people actually think about Black History Month.I agree why is black history in the month of Feb.?
I think this would have been more effective if this came out in febuary, that way you could report on what happened and give more detail.
Black history month is very important. I want to find out why its in feb.
Although the article was well written some things you didnt know could have been found out from other students that will be in the preformance. Other than that it was nice to read about.
I like the article but I feel like theres nothing special about it. I don’t mean to sound harsh but I agree with other people, it’s just not that different.
I think we should have a national ASIAN history month! The would ROCK!!!!! But i like Black History Month too. I always learn something new every year about Black History.
I think there needs to be a little bit more detail.but all-in-all the story was ok.
i am excited about performing in the black history program, but i agree; there was not much information and this article came out too soon. i would of waited till i knew what was actually goin to happen.
i agree this article should have come ou in february and it should have been more informative. ;(
