The Leon JV football team fell to the Florida High Seminoles 19-14 on Thursday night. The game was played at Bobby Benson field located on Leon’s campus.
The Lions jumped to an early 14-0 lead in the first half. Fullback Vincent Mulvaney scored both touchdowns, taking handoffs from quarterback Sam Myhre.
But the Lions were unable to maintain the lead and hold off a late second-half rally by the Seminoles. Mental mistakes and turnovers resulted in disaster for the team. The Seminoles scored 19 unanswered points and halted a final …

Seniors Tira Bacon and Courtney Lipford were the leaders of the softball program this season.
Lipford came through in the clutch with a three-run home run in extra innings against Lincoln High to put the Lions into the district championship game.
That home run also made the Lions eligible for the regional quarterfinals, a feat that had not been accomplished since 2003.
Lipford led the Lions this season with six home runs, breaking both Leon High and Tallahassee records.
Lipford plans to play at L.B. Wallace Community College in Alabama.

When it comes to using their brains, Megan Kolman and Andrea Caspary don’t limit their intelligence to the classroom.
In addition to having unweighted grade point averages above 3.80, the Leon duo invariably outwits its opponents on the tennis court.
It was those smarts which enabled Kolman and Caspary to lead the Leon girls varsity tennis team to the 2010 state championship, the first ever by a team from the entire Panhandle region.
Their mental prowess was never more valuable than on the final day of the state tournament, when they …

Sophomore Delaney Dye did not start diving until this year, but she’s already making a splash on a national level.
On the weekend of April 10-11, Dye traveled to Ohio for the National Competition, competing in the 16- to 18-year-old division.
Dye placed 20th in her age division, which she qualified for by winning first place in the FHSAA state competition. Dye was one of six competitors from Florida.
Dye felt she could have placed higher if it hadn’t been for her injury during warm up.

People often compare high school to a journey. It’s something that everyone must go through on the quest for man- or womanhood.
For me, it was a little different. My high school career was a little more like a tennis match: bouncing off the walls, taking crazy paths, but eventually getting down to the final point, the difference between a win and a loss.
It’s been a long and winding road, a long three-setter that has taken a lot out of me. In fact, I can remember many of the …

They danced on tables at a Greek restaurant near Disney World, sang songs during the four-hour drive home in their mini-van and laughed until their sides hurt as freshman Mary Phillips Smith kept them entertained with one outrageous funny line after another.
It was a celebration worthy of the occasion for the 2010 Leon High School girls varsity state championship tennis team.
After all, these ladies made history.
With their victory in Orlando’s Sanlando Park, they not only became Leon’s first tennis team to win a state championship, they became the …

The scene at the Leon High School tennis courts on the afternoon of April 22 was a historical one.
With the boys and girls varsity tennis teams both hosting Booker T. Washington of Pensacola in the Region I finals, the student body packed the house. The Leon tennis boosters offered up free lunch and then the fifth, sixth and seventh period classes came down the steps to take in the action. For over two hours, the courts were literally surrounded by screaming fans.
“I’ve never seen anything like that in …
